Hello again friends
I have some news for you all! Acouple of days ago a document was put together by the people in Kansas that support slavery. This document was called the Lecompton Constitution and it said Kansas would come into the union as a slave state! However this isnt fair at all! All the abolitonists didnt even bother to vote on this document because they knew how ridiculous it was. This document still went to congress though and our president who isnt supposed to be neutral told the congress to pass it! As you can imagine this got the North very mad and we are no longer fans of the president, Buchanan. But luckily the congress realzied that this was unfair and said another vote would be needed in order to send the document back and possibly having it passed. Thank god for congress because that would not be good if Kansas came in as a slave state when our goal is to get rid of slavery! Anyways of course another vote was held because the pro slavery group really wanted this document to be passed but we, the abolitionists stood our ground and we were able to win the vote by a landslide. i recently talked to my old neighbors who had recently moved out to Kansas and they said that the violence between the North and the South was ten times worse than Massachusetts! I cant even imagine what it is like there! Thats all for now though I heard that a riot just occured outside I need to go and see what happened!

Kansas Nebraksa Act
Hello Friends
Another big problem has come about! Stephen Douglas got the Kansas Nebraska Act passed that says these two states will be determined as slave or free by popular sovereignty. As a result Northerners and Southerners are moving out of where they live and are going to Kansas and Nebraska in order to get more of there people there to determine the vote. My husband asked me if i wanted to move out there today, even though i am a huge supporter of abolition the violence is getting worse and worse each day and it would be very dangerous. They are currently placing votes right now in Kansas to decide the preliminary government (i have my fingers crossed it will be an anti slave government because that will give us the advantage). UHH OHH word just came in that a pro slavery government was elected............. not fair!!!! They are now only going to pass laws benefiting slavery. But the abolitionists came up with a good idea. They created their own government calls the Free State Party this was good because now the pro slavery government wasn't completely in charge but it also cause a lot more chaos since there was now two governments. This chaos made the violence begin to get even worse!(im glad i stayed in Massachusetts) Our senator from Massachusetts Charles Sumner gave a speech in congress stating his opinion on the Kansas Nebraska Act (we do have freedom of speech right?) And what does this guy Preston Brooks from the South do?! He goes up to Charles Sumner and starts beating him with a cane!!! Us northerners were outraged! He was practically beat to death for nothing at all! Thats all for now though ill write again soon!

Compromise of 1850

Its Mary Smith. I have some news for all of you today. You know how i said that we didn't know what was going to happen to the new territory added in the Mexican Cession, well now we do! The compromise of 1850 was passed but it was complicated. Let me start from the beginning........... First Wilmot Proviso (a guy who the North loved) tried to get a proposal passed that would outlaw slavery in the new territory, but as you may have guessed this didn't go through. There was many other problems other than the new territory being slave states or free states but im not going to go into all of that because i believe this was the biggest issue. Sectionalism is a major problem right now in the United States and it seems there is nothing that will even make it a little but better. However there are a couple of guys who think they might be able to help. These men go by the names of Henry Clay, Stephen Douglas, and Daniel Webster. They put together a document that they feel will not only solve the controversy about the new territory entering as slave or free but also all the other problems!(I know sounds impossible). Other than there so called "solutions" to the other problems that the U.S. was facing, they failed to mention the Mexican Cession other than that it was going to be organized into territories! Ridiculous right?! William Seward is an abolitionist from the North that we all love and he tried to tell them that the Compromise of 1850 was bad and that you could not compromise on slavery but it still ended up being passed. Since slavery was not mentioned in the document that means that the states future relies on popular sovereignty which was a vote deciding whether or not it will be a slave state. I don't agree with this at all because I think that slavery should be completely abolished and not something that is voted on! However it is late and i must go make dinner i will write again soon.

Mexican Cession Territory
Hello Friends
I am Mary Smith, an abolitionist in the North and i am a wife and a mother. I proudly support the movement to get rid of slavery and I am completely against the South. They say they use slavery because it is part of their culture but slavery is just flat out cruel! I can never imagine being a slave, never mind my children being slaves and having to undergo the harsh punishments and living conditions! However, with the Mexican American war ending we gained the Mexican Cession. As a result we now need to figure out whether these territories are going to come into the United States as slave states or free states. If you ask me i think these states should come in as free and then we can begin to get rid of slavery once and for all, but this is difficult to do. This is difficult because there is the North and the South who display completely opposite views and because of people feeling so strongly about their specific views violence has been occurring. I wont go into the stories about violence, but let me tell you they are bloody to say the least! Thats all for now though i must go and take care of the kids but i will write again soon! (by the way below is a picture of the Mexican Cession terrioty that i am taking about)
